Sailing, Yachting -- What's the Difference?

The world of boating can seem daunting to the novice. Many wonder if there is a difference between sailing, yachting and similar types of boating. A sailboat is a water craft on the small side, normally featuring one mast. There are larger sailing ships and then there are catamarans, which are sailboats with dual parallel hulls. Yachts are pleasure boats that feature sails and can be wind powered or wind and motor powered. There are yacht clubs around the world for pleasure boating enthusiasts. These clubs commonly hold regattas, or boat races for both juniors and adults.

Because yachts can be very luxurious, they are often used as places of residence when docked. A pleasure cruise on a yacht can take anywhere from a few hours to days, weeks or longer. Some people, especially retired yacht owners, travel to exotic world locations on their yachts. While a yacht can be a type of sailboat, they are usually bigger, faster and more luxurious than your average single mast sailboat powered by wind only. Sailing can be more labor intensive than yachting. With both sailboats and yachts there are all kinds of competitions, clubs and associations.

If you are interested in getting into the world of sailing or yachting the first thing you should do is take a look at different boats to see what interests you the most. Personal water craft come in many different styles and sizes. For example there are small sailboats meant for one or two, and large yachts that can accommodate many. Then there are family boats designed to be liveable for the average family. While it is fairly uncommon there are families with school-age children who spend most of their time traveling by sailboat or yacht.

Once you know what kind of sailing, yachting or pleasure boating craft you want, the next step is to compare prices and features of different boats and decide whether you want to buy new or pre-owned.
