How to Choose a Sailing Instructor
Anyone who wants to learn the art of sailing will need a good sailing instructor. Because of the hazards involved in boating you will need someone with a lot of sailing experience who knows how to teach. One way to research instructors and schools in your area is online. The Internet is a vast resource for lots of different sailing institutes. No matter where you are if there is a large body of water nearby there is going to be at least one sailing school and/or club. Many community sailing organizations offer lessons for an affordable price.
Any instructor you are considering should be certified by the ASA or American Sailing Association. This organization upholds instructors to rigorous standards and helps connect students with instructors. You may decide to take a group class or prefer one-on-one instruction. Make sure you meet with a potential instructor before signing up to make sure you are comfortable with him or her. Sometimes there will be more than one instructor teaching the class depending on class size. Your instructor should be familiar with the type of sailing you are interested in.
For example, there is hobbyist sailing where you might spend an afternoon on a boat, then there are long term sailing excursions that take days, weeks or months. There are some people who want to learn to sail and eventually compete in regattas, or sailing races. Yacht racing is so popular that there are yacht clubs around the world. These clubs provide members with boat access, affordable teaching and much more. They have programs for junior yacht enthusiasts as well as adults. Yachting and sailing are great family activities that can bring you and your children closer together and foster a team spirit.
Once you've met with your instructor, learned about their credentials and have decided you feel comfortable with them, the next step is signing up for class. There may be a deposit required to hold your spot if class is upcoming. Also you may be billed for equipment, however many schools include all necessary equipment and even food in the cost of the class. Choosing an all-inclusive sailing instruction package can help you avoid hidden costs and save money.
