Sailing 101

When starting out in the world of sailing there is a lot to learn. By studying the basics of Sailing 101, you can further your education in this area. Sailing is a popular water sport that can be relaxing or thrilling depending on your preferences. Many sailors also enjoy scuba diving at the exotic locations they visit or participating in some deep sea fishing. You can sail for an afternoon or a whole lot longer. For these reasons and more there are countless sailing enthusiasts and even clubs. Yacht clubs are plentiful around the world.

A good source of sailing information is the book Sailing for Dummies by J.J. Isler and Peter Isler. The Islers are United States sailing champs and thus very qualified to write this book. You will learn how to select a sailing school or course, how to properly use life jackets, handle serious sailing emergencies and more. The book teaches you how to tie ten different knots used in sailing and how to launch your sailboat from a beach, ramp or trailer. Also covered are all the aspects of traveling by sailboat from one location to another and back again. As if that's not enough, the book also goes over weather and wind conditions, chart reading and much more.

As far as sailing tips are concerned, Sailing for Dummies is an incredible source. You may also want to supplement your sailing education by researching online. You can learn everything from the history of sailing to how to choose a sailing guide. In addition to the basics of operating a sailboat, you should also learn more about sailing destinations. Sound sailing is popular with many enthusiasts. A sound, also called a seaway, is a body of water that can best be described as a sea, inlet or channel that lies between two land masses. Puget Sound is an example of a sound that is commonly used for sailing.

Even after you've completed Sailing 101, there are more advanced techniques you may want to learn. For this reason there are sailing schools and courses for all skill levels from beginner to advanced. As you progress with your skills you may find yourself able to take longer sailing vacations. Sailing is a sport that can take you to many new places and expand your horizons in more ways than one. In addition to relaxing hobby sailing there are sailboat and yacht races for sailors who like to compete.
