An Introduction to Performance Sailing
While spending time on a sailboat can be a relaxing experience, performance sailing is usually a high adrenaline activity. This pursuit can also be referred to as amateur and/or professional competitive sailing. Another term you'll hear when entering the world of competitive sailing is regatta, the traditional word used to refer to a yacht race or series of yacht races. A yacht is a pleasure boat with sails often built for the purposes of racing. There are yacht clubs all over the globe for yachting enthusiasts of all ages.
You will also hear the word performance used when shopping for sailing gear or a sailing school. It is a popular term to throw around, especially for those who want to sell their instructional services or sailing merchandise. When competing in yacht races you do want the best quality gear you can afford. However before yacht racing is something you should do, learning the basics is required. Yacht clubs have junior and adult members, and offer instructions for every skill level. The earlier in life you start the easier learning to sail will be, however even adults can learn to sail for the first time.
There are a variety of different yacht and sailboat races in which you can compete. In addition to those held by sailing clubs and yacht clubs, there are well known races like the America's Cup, which is an offshore race conducted on the open seas. Inshore races are held closer to the shore, usually within view of land or from one land body to another. Harbor races are another type of race, which take place in waters that are protected with the course marked by buoys.
Performance sailing is something that can be a hobby or a career depending on how serious you are. If you want to get into sailing as a hobby, then you may not be ready to race. Sailing can also be a great way to do some deep sea fishing or scuba diving. When you are ready to compete, it is important to have a high performance boat and a crew that knows how to help a sailor reach victory in the world of competitive sailing.
