Is Sailboat Life Right for You?
A very popular sport this days is of course sailing. For many, there is nothing more relaxing than spending time on a boat. However there is a difference between taking a sailboat vacation and living the sailboat life. The first thing to consider are your sailing skills, or the sailing skills of the boat captain. Experience and ease are important when it comes to sailing full-time. If you're just starting out in the wide world of sailing, gain skills and knowledge with trips ranging from a day to several days until you feel confident with your level of sailing experience.
One of the things to think about is your age. Retired individuals and couples are more likely to take up the sailing lifestyle than are adults in their twenties to forties. The reason for this is because it can be difficult to raise a family or sustain employment on a sailboat. However once the kids are grown and there are adequate retirement funds available those called by the lure of the sea may decide to travel via sailboat on a full-time basis. This can be a romantic and rewarding experience.
If you are interested in sailing, you will of course need a sailboat. If the money is available to you it is possible to find favorable deals on sailboats and pay in cash. Buying at an auction can help you get a great deal on one of these water craft. If you can't pay cash for a sailboat don't worry -- there are plenty of financing programs available that let you finance a boat for a few hundred dollars a month until paid. This is sometimes a more manageable way for consumers to purchase a boat as they can be expensive.
You should consider your own personality and those of your potential boat mates. Are you the type of person who is comfortable in a confined area for lengthly periods? While you do get to travel and explore when boating there are times where you are stuck on the boat, which may be small as compared with traditional land housing. If you enjoy quiet time on the water and aren't bothered by small quarters then living a the life of a recreational sailor is something to consider.
